AANA Mourns the Loss of Orthopaedic Visionary, Freddie H. Fu, M.D.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of former AANA Board Member and friend to all, Freddie H. Fu, M.D. He was a visionary well ahead of his time and his impact on our field has been incredible. “He will fondly and respectfully be remembered and revered as an exceptional orthopaedic surgeon who revolutionized how we care for all levels of athletes and individuals, an outstanding physician and researcher, a devoted mentor and teacher, and a warm and loving husband, father and friend,” said AANA President, Mark H. Getelman, M.D., FAANA, “His legacy will endure through all the outstanding physicians and surgeons he trained and touched. We are all much better from having Freddie in our lives as a colleague, mentor, or friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Hilda, his entire family and community.”

Brian J. Cole, M.D., M.B.A., FAANA, AANA’s Immediate Past President remembers Dr. Fu, “Whether one had the privilege of training with Freddie, being treated by Freddie, touched by Freddie, listening to Freddie, reading something that Freddie authored or simply knowing the Freddie Fu that we have all come to respect and love, the impact was always the same... life altering.” He fondly continued, “Freddie had endless energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and compassion. Not only was Freddie a highly respected and skilled orthopaedic surgeon, he had boundless charisma. Many are familiar with Linda Ellis’ poem about the importance of the dash between the day we are born and the day we pass. There is simply no dash big enough for his legacy. Freddie, we have you to thank for making the world a better place. Mission accomplished! Thank you and may you rest in peace.”

Dr. Fu led by example. He grew the University of Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Program to great heights and also served his local community with equal vigor. His immense impact on both the orthopaedic and greater Pittsburgh communities will endure for generations to come. We send our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved him. He was truly a giant and will be greatly missed.
