AANA is committed to supporting a diverse and inclusive membership with programming and leadership that promotes an understanding and respect for all people. We believe that diversity contributes to and influences innovation and success keeping AANA at the forefront of minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery.

AANA is dedicated to addressing the disparity and making an impact on the future of Orthopaedics. In 2020, at the direction of the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force, AANA launched several initiatives, and the organization continues to develop new ways to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment:

Future Scope

FUTURE SCOPE: INTRODUCTION TO ARTHROSCOPY AND ORTHOPAEDICS

In 2022, AANA successfully launched “Future Scope: Introduction to Arthroscopy and Orthopaedics.” The biannual course series, in partnership with DePuy Synthes, The Orthopaedics Company of Johnson & Johnson, introduced underrepresented medical students to the fundamentals of orthopaedic practice. The courses include a robust agenda with lecture topics that give attendees insight into what it takes to have a successful career in orthopaedics, along with an esteemed faculty made up of leaders in arthroscopy, sports medicine and orthopaedics.

November 4, 2022 – Raynham, Massachusetts
August 2023 – Rosemont, Illinois (tentative)
November 2023 – Palm Beach, Florida (tentative)

DIVERSITY AWARD

At the AANA Annual Meeting, through a blind selection process, the best paper addressing diversity and inclusion or authored by someone who is an underrepresented minority in medicine is selected to receive recognition at the meeting and publication in Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery.

DIVERSITY GUEST LECTURE

The Diversity Guest Lecture is a featured presentation delivered at the AANA Annual Meeting. This special guest is selected by the Program Chair with the oversight of the AANA Diversity Officer. The lecture highlights an individual’s journey in orthopaedics or their experience with diversity and inclusion in the specialty. The Diversity Guest Lecturer is invited to lecture at the Future Scope course the following year.
