Before your surgery, there are several steps you can take to help ensure the success of your procedure.

For example, depending on your medical history and the nature of the procedure, you may be asked to undergo certain laboratory tests prior to your procedure. You should also share with your physician a list of any medications or herbal supplements you are taking, as it may be necessary to alter the dosage prior to the time of surgery. Be sure to notify your surgeon of any known allergies as well.

Your surgeon will usually recommend that you stop all anti-inflammatory or anticoagulant medications prior to surgery.

You will be asked to sign an "Informed Consent" form prior to the procedure. This is your written acknowledgement that you understand the surgery to be performed along with the possible benefits and risks and have given your permission to proceed.

Tips for Patients

Follow these tips for a healthy outcome and recovery:

  • Keep the skin of the site of surgery clean before your surgery, and avoid bruising, sunburn, poison ivy, cuts, abrasions, infections and other traumas to the area.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.
  • Do not eat or drink anything the morning of surgery unless instructed to do so by your surgeon or anesthesiologist.
  • Wear loose, baggy clothing that will fit comfortably over the site of surgery.
  • Plan to arrive well in advance of your procedure on the day of surgery. Typically, medical staff will tell you what time to arrive.
